Tech Issues with Cars Affected by 3G Stoppage

Car dashboard with driver on steering wheel and console features

For the rollout of the new 5G (Fifth Generation) networking system, 3G is saying bye-bye throughout 2022. Automobiles made after a specific year that relied on the 3G system (based on car make and model) will no longer have computer capabilities. While obvious issues with GPS systems and other console features will stop functioning, there have not been any other stated problems, such as operability. While there has been no official word on what exactly gets messed up, we have heard many of our Tscion participants and volunteers have stated weird issues with their cars, especially about a computer-based notification that relies on driving safely.

Consumer Reports has an excellent overview of this change:

As wireless carriers prepare to shut down their 3G networks over the coming months, millions of cars may lose the ability to automatically contact first responders after a crash . Some vehicles just need a software or hardware upgrade, but others—including vehicles from ChryslerDodgeHyundaiJeepLexusNissanRam, and Toyota—will lose their connections, permanently. - Keith Barry of Consumer Reports, Read More

Since 2008 many cars have relied strongly on computer technology to allow functions for everything from satellite radio, navigation, and in some cases, dashboard features that depend on drivability or alert of any driving issues.

For many automobiles, Computer Module systems identify as three plugs under the hood, generally on the passenger side., while some are under the seat of the automobile. Regardless of its location, many cars over the past 20 years have become reliant on these systems that are now being phased out, making millions of cars obsolete. If the fuel phaseout around 2024 weren't enough, many computer-based vehicles would face the first hurdle of old-world cars, technology.

Based on the Consumer Report article, many vehicles will experience complete phaseouts starting February 2022, while some will begin experiencing issues as early as late January 2022.

Read Consumer Report to determine if your vehicle will experience technical issues and potential solutions to resolve this upcoming issue.
